Work Stress Management Tips

With the economy dropping last year, stress management at work has suddenly become very important. While there are always pressures with a job, the fear of outside factors that may contribute to layoffs or other major changes at the workplace has lead to an increase in work stress levels. There are many ways to tackle stress, and a healthy diet and lifestyle will greatly aid in managing the level of anxiety you feel. There are also many specific steps you can take to make your time at work a great deal more productive, with less hassles.

One of the major steps you can take to improve stress issues at work is with effective scheduling and prioritization. You may have limited control over how your schedule is set, but if you are able, then you should always strive for a balanced workload. The last thing you want is for large projects and important duties to be grouped together at the same time. You’ll feel less stress if you are able to spread things around so that you have more time to focus on each task.

Most people want to work hard, do a good job and impress their boss, yet another part of stress management at work is learning to delegate. High energy people will commit themselves to taking on more projects than they can reasonably handle without help. While prioritizing helps in stress reduction, delegating certain tasks to others who are qualified to do them not only helps to reduce our level of job stress, but also helps others to see that we can work as a team. Stress at work will always be with us, but we don’t have to wear ourselves out physically and emotionally. Delegating is an important tool to utilize.

Another good way to manage stress is by starting work a little earlier. Even 15 minutes can make a huge difference in easing into your day, or taking care of some smaller duties that will free you up to focus on the more important projects. Dealing with stress doesn’t have to mean major changes to your workday. Starting a little earlier, taking an extra 15 minute break later in the day, or staying after work for 15 minutes are small changes that can bring real balance to your workday without drastic changes.

The important thing to do is to look at yourself and your life and make these simple changes as part of stress management. Especially with the current recession, our ability to take these steps can’t be over emphasized. While stress at work may continue, learning to follow a plan of action will not only make your time at work more productive, it will aid in your overall ability to be relaxed at both work and at home. We spend a significant amount of time at work, so ideally you’ll want that time to be as stress-free as possible.
