Battling Depression – You’re Not Alone

Estimates are that almost 15 million Americans are battling depression, a serious problem. It’s a proven illness. Even though it’s a mental illness, the sufferer is not responsible for it because of personal habits like laziness. Anyone can become depressed. It has no reasoning for its path. Executives to janitors can be affected. Race or religion aren’t important. Strength or weakness isn’t a factor with this disease.

The age-old stereotypes that have been associated with a mental illness must be ignored. Without treatment it will get worse. It will not simply go away if you ignore the symptoms. If a person doesn’t seek medical attention to help in battling depression, the disease becomes worse until it dominates their entire life.

Many things contribute to depression. Feeling sad or anxious for a day or two is not the extent of this disease. The affects of true depression can last for months and years. Depression at its worst can lead one to the act of suicide. In its early stages it may just make you feel down. It’s possible that the disease will steal away the enjoyment you used to have for favorite hobbies. Loneliness and despair are common. You may feel like a failure at life and cannot see where the future is going to get any better.

As time goes by it can begin to change your personality for all to see. It impacts every phase of life from work and school to at home. Expect insomnia and increased anxiety as you are battling depression.

Depression has many causes. Stress can be a major factor. Stress itself has many causes such as losing a friend or being told you have a serious medical condition. DNA is a factor. It can be caused by abuse, be it be physical, emotional or sexual. Looking at the monthly bills might cause it. There is so much pressure in the world today to compete and satisfy those in our society.

Battling depression is a serious problem. But for people who look for it there is help. Only about 4.5 million of the 15 million Americans who suffer from depression each year will admit the problem and seek help. It’s important that you look for assistance, or if a loved one is affected find help for them.

Prozac and other medications, along with psychotherapy, are a common treatment combination for battling depression. However, this can get to be very expensive and the antidepressants offer as many side effects as the depression itself. There are natural medications available that contain the ingredient ‘hyperforin’ that are just as effective as the prescribed antidepressants. There is also assistance for this terrible illness in the form of support groups.

The bottom line is that there are many effective ways of battling depression, but you have to want it or someone has to want it for you.
